Leopard Facts For Kids Ages 6-8

In the Clouducated Kids Nonfiction Book, Leopard Facts For Kids, you will learn many interesting facts about leopards.

  • Leopards live in many habitats: Leopards live in many different habitats including savannas, mountains, temperate forests, tropical rainforests, and even deserts. They are the only one of the four big cats that can live in both tropical rainforest and desert habitat. The other big cats are jaguars, lions, and tigers.
  • Leopards have spots: A leopard’s fur color varies in color from pale yellow to a deep gold. It is patterned with black markings, called rosettes, which are small groups of spots that look like roses.
  • Leopards have a small build: The leopard is the smallest of the four big cats. Compared to other big cats, it has short stocky legs, a long slender body, and a broad head. It looks very much like the jaguar, but has a smaller build.
  • Leopards are athletes: Leopards are very strong and athletic! They can run in bursts of speed up to 36 miles per hour (58 km/h), leap more than 20 feet (6 m) forward, and jump 10 feet (3 m) straight up into the air! Leopards are very good climbers. Their long tails help them to balance themselves in the trees.
  • Leopards mark their territory: Leopards claw tree trunks, rub up against them, and urinate on trees to leave their scent behind, marking their territories. Leopards try to avoid one another, turning away if they see each other.
  • Leopards eat meat: Like all big cats, leopards are carnivores. They eat a wide variety of animals, such as antelope, baboons, wild sheep, goats, boar, deer, large birds, fish, snakes, and insects.
  • Leopards eat in trees: Leopards do not eat their prey at the site of the kill. The prey is usually carried up into a tree. They can eat their prey where lions and hyenas won’t steal it away from them.
