Lion Facts For Kids Ages 9-12
In the Clouducated Kids Nonfiction Book, Lion Facts For Kids, you will learn many interesting lion facts.
- Lions are fierce predators: Lions are fierce predators at the top of the food chain. They are known as the king of beasts. They hunt, catch, and eat other animals in order to survive. They can sever the spinal cord of an animal with their sharp canine teeth.
- Lions are the second largest cats: Lions are the second largest living cats after the tiger. A male lion can be over 8 feet (2.4 m) long. It can weigh 400-500 pounds (180-230 kg). The females are smaller. Lions in zoos are usually heavier than wild lions because they get plenty of food and little exercise. Wild lions have to walk for miles to find food and then they have to exert a lot of energy to catch it before they can eat it. Captive lions also live much longer, occasionally up to 30 years, compared to 15 years in the wild.
- Most lions live in Africa: A small number of lions live in India on a protected reserve, but most lions live in Africa. The African savanna, south of the Sahara Desert, is home to the largest population of lions. Wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, hippos, wart hogs, elephants, hyenas, and many other kinds of animals live on the African savanna with lions. Many of the large prey that lions hunt live in herds or groups. They are always on the lookout for predators. Lions have to work in teams to be successful in catching their prey. Lionesses do 90% of the hunting.
