Giraffe Facts For Kids Ages 9-12
In the Clouducated Kids Nonfiction Book, Giraffe Facts For Kids, you will learn many interesting giraffe facts.
- Giraffes tower over other animals: The most distinguishing characteristics of a giraffe are its exceptionally long neck and legs, and its distinctive patchwork coat. Giraffes tower over all other animals on the African savanna. They are the tallest of all land animals. They also have the longest neck of any animal. A giraffe’s legs are about 6 feet tall (1.8 m) and its neck is about 6 feet (1.8) long! A full-grown male giraffe can grow to be about 20 feet (6 m) tall!
- Giraffes live in Africa: Giraffes live on the African savanna and woodlands. The African savanna is a grassland with very dry, but nutrient-rich soil. It is dotted with flat-topped acacia trees, which are a favorite of giraffes. The savanna is home to leopards, lions, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest, antelope, buffalo, rhinoceros, and giraffes, among other animals.
- Giraffes eat plants: The African savanna is home to more kinds of grazing animals than anywhere else on Earth. About two million large plant-eating mammals live on the savanna. Many herbivores can survive because of the plentiful grasses, trees, and shrubs that grow there. Giraffes are browsers, feeding on leaves high in the trees that other animals cannot reach. Many carnivores eat the herbivores. They all depend on each other to keep the environment in balance.
- Giraffes need lots of land: Loss of habitat is the major threat to giraffe survival. Giraffes compete with people for land. A small giraffe herd needs about 45 acres (18 hectares) for feeding. Roads, buildings, and towns are built as populations grow, causing the giraffes’ habitats to shrink. Many people are working together to save giraffes.
